Question by Savage serenity: How can servers remember orders without writing them down?
How is it that servers in restaurants can remember complicated orders so well, even without writing them down?

Best answer:

Answer by Bone
Practice makes perfect! I agree the reason they can remember those things is very hard to understand. But all it is, is practice. The servers that can remember,if you ask them, they have probably been in the same career for a long time.
They dont remember it word buy word. Many servers use different techniques. One might be that they use the first letter of waht you ordered. For example….I want a burger no lettuce. They would think bnl, which stands for burger no lettuce. Well i hope you feel some relief because i answered to the best of my ability.

Give your answer to this question below!

Terminal Server Experiment

So I got a server from work that I was going to convert into a terminal server. The problem was that it was a 1U system. The reason that’s a problem is that a 1U system has small fans, and the smaller the fan, the bigger the noise. Bigger fans can rotate at slower speeds. When I turned on the 1U server, I could hear it from two floors away. I was going to have to convert this into a tower system and use bigger fans.

I was able to cut some material out of this case to house the motherboard, but this motherboard required A LOT of fans to be running in order to power on. I just didn’t have that many large fans. I also had to use mount the 1U power supply into the case because it’s 25PIN +8 and I didn’t have any of those. Because I was restricted to this power supply, I didn’t have power for the SATA drive (because of the back plane board for the drives). My only option for the drive was to lay the back plane on top and mount the drives. Then because the distance was so far from the controller, I could only mount two drives instead of four.

Anyway, unless I was willing to put some money into this, the conversion is a failure. I’m going to just suck it up and see if I can add parts of this server into my workstation that I’m using as a server anyway. Just combine the two int one really mean terminal server. I don’t think I’m going to get as much RAM out of it as I would like though.

Development server

This is the Mac Mini I’m planning on using as a development server. I spent a few days installing software with a keyboard/monitor/mouse and now it’s running as a "headless" server on the home network, administered entirely via ssh.

Google: server error.

I cannot be reached at my gmail right now. Google’s gmail servers are down. I’ve already tried 100 times 30 seconds waiting and refreshing, but will have to be more patient.

Behold my newest project. It’s a portable server system. Low power is key. The external drives are eSATA, and connect to my PCMCIA eSATA card. Also, all the Hard drive work will be on the shuttle drive, so it’ll be easy to upkeep. In theory.

Also MUCH quieter than a normal server setup. S-Video out to my TV too!

server farm
For all of those who thought I’d fallen off the planet, I’m sorry…Still here, hanging in… Even if I don’t comment, I still look, and you know what? You guys take AWESOME pictures…:))

Work has been a little crazy the last week or so, …had a key developer resign, financial year end for large portion of our customers, and just HAD to get the server farm up and sorted.

Meet Vader and Enterprise. Vader runs a 2003 terminal server for secure remote access to the accounting system, and a SQL 2000 development server, both virtualised in VMWare Server on SuSe 10.1. Enterprise runs SQL 2005 for the accounting system, the public FTP site, Fax and Print server and BACKUP(!) services ) on a stripped version of XP Pro (what I call XP Server …lol!)

Some guys could have knocked this lot together in a few hours. Took me a while longer…:(
